Windows Server Change Product Key is not working
Windows activation is an essential process to complete after installing a new operating system. Every precaution should be taken to enter the correct product key to explore the full set of system features. If you enter the wrong key by mistake, you should immediately click on the Change Product Key button and enter the new product key. Occasionally, Change product key may not work. If you are facing this problem, you must first deactivate and uninstall the old Windows product key:
- Open the command prompt and run it as administrator.
- Type and run the following command –
- Then erase the product key by running this command –
- To enter your new product key, use the command:
slmgr.vbs /ipk xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx.
- Activate Windows by entering the command
- Wait until Windows is activated.
Let’s see the above steps in a little more detail!
Type CMD in the Windows search box. When the Command Prompt option appears, right-click on it and choose the Execute as administrator option.
Type the following and press Enter to run the command:
This will delete the product key.
A Windows Script Host dialog box should appear with the following message: Product key successfully uninstalled. Hit it Okay button to close the dialog box.
Now type the following command to make sure the old key is deleted from all over the Windows operating system including the registry.
Then type the following command and press Enter:
slmgr.vbs /ipk XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX
Here, X represents the actual numbers from your product key. This will install the correct 5 × 5 product key. The 5 × 5 product key can be found on the server’s Certificate of Authenticity (COA).
A Windows Script Host dialog box should appear. Product key XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX installed successfully. Click on Okay to close the dialog box.
Finally, enter the following command in the Command Prompt window and press Enter key to activate Windows.
A Windows script host should appear with the read text line Product activated successfully. Click on Okay to close the dialog box.
Why isn’t my Windows product key working?
It is likely that your copy of Windows is not genuine, or that it has been used on more devices than permitted by the terms of the Microsoft Software License Agreement. If not, you can follow the troubleshooting steps highlighted in the guide above.

Where do you find your Windows product key?
If you recently purchased a physical copy of Windows, you should find the product key on a tag or card inside the box that Windows came with. If your PC came with Windows built-in, the product key should appear on a sticker on your device. Apart from the above, the Windows version key that came with the PC is stored in the UEFI firmware or BIOS of the PC.
