EPF interest rate of 8.1% approved for 2021-2022, amount to be credited shortly; Here’s how to check the EPF balance

The Center approved an 8.1% interest rate on Employees Provident Fund (EPF) deposits for 2021-22, the lowest in four decades, from 8.5% the previous year. This will pave the way for interest to be credited to the accounts of over sixty million EPFO subscribers in 2021-22 earlier than usual. In previous years, the interest rate was usually credited to subscribers’ accounts around Diwali or later due to a delay in approval from the Ministry of Finance.

Any employee contributing to the EPF can consult the balance of his account using different methods; they do not need to wait for the employer to communicate the statement of the employee provident fund (EPF) at the end of the year to know the balance.

Each month, an employee pays 12% of his basic income into the PF account, and the employer matches this payment. However, employees can contribute more via the Voluntary Provident Fund (VPF). The interest rate on VPF and EPF is the same.
