A man from Tavares who works as a waiter at the Ramshackle Cafe in Leesburg was arrested for drunk driving early Sunday morning after volunteering to serve as a designated driver.
James Roy Ball Jr., 34, was seen disobeying a stop sign and making an inappropriate turn by a police officer from Eustis and the officer stopped Ball’s car at Ferran Park. The officer noticed the smell of alcohol coming from Ball as he fumbled with his papers. He told the officer he was “hanging out with friends” at Big Dog’s Saloon in Mount Dora. He told the officer he had drunk two White Claws and two shots at the bar.
Based on the officer’s observation and Ball’s poor performance in field sobriety drills, he was taken into custody for drunk driving.
At this point, Ball told the officer he was supposed to be the group’s designated driver. However, her friend told Ball that her boyfriend was a police officer from Tavares and that Ball would not have to worry about drinking and driving.
Ball provided breath samples which recorded BACs of 0.199 and 0.198. He was taken into custody and held in the Lake County Jail. He was released after posting a $ 1,000 bond.
